Improving the habitat and biodiversity: Du Pont, Spain.

Du Pont have an 800 acre production facility in Asturias, Spain. Extensive habitat improvement has seen the restoration of natural habitats previously destroyed by intensive farming.

To achieve this, 160,000 trees of 54 native varieties were planted to return 180 acres of eucalyptus plantations to natural woodland. A 16 acre wetland is now the home to 800 water birds of 32 species.

The effect of these improvements has been to increase the biodiversity to match the variety of a pre-industrial landscape.

With the help of local environmental organisations, an important part of the programme is the preservation of local heritage such as farm-cottages, granaries, a grist mill and lime kiln. In addition to creating many jobs for the local community, the production site now has a wider range of plants and animals than it did when the programme was started in 1990.
