Shell Better Britain Campaign

The Shell Better Britain Campaign supports has supported community action in the UK for over 30 years. Each year about £150,000 a year is given to a wide range of projects that have a positive effect to the local environment and helps to bring the community closer together. Projects look at sustainable development and encourage community groups to tackle local issues such as pollution, energy use, waste minimisation, transport and wildlife habitats.

In one project, over seven years a municipal waste dump was transformed into an urban nature park and community centre. St Nicholas Fields in York provides a wildlife habitat and an eco-centre which has solar power, rainwater purification and a wind turbine.

In South Wales, a group at Awel Aman Tawe want to develop a community-owned wind farm to produce clean electricity. They have completed an extensive programme of consultation work culminating in a referendum which fell in favour of the proposed development.
